Simon Yates (Mitchellton-Scott) attacks and wins stage 9 in Gran Sasso Giro d'Italia.
Froome crosses and losses more time. He's lost 1:06 on Yates. Aru has lost 1:13, a bad day for him too.

 Top three stage result

1, Simon Yates (Great Britain) Mitchelton-Scott 5:54:13,
2, Thibaut Pinot (France) Groupama-FDJ,
3, Esteban Chaves (Mitchellton-Scott)

The Mitchelton-Scott rider was part of a five-man group that went up the road in the final kilometres and attacked in the last metres to win the day ahead of Thibaut Pinot (FDJ).

How it unfolded

Stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia saw another summit finish, this time to the Apennine ski resort of Gran Sasso d'Italia. Giovanni Battaglin and Francesco Chioccioli are among the past stage winners here, while its last inclusion saw Marco Pantani take victory during his ill-fated 1999 Giro.

The second category climb at Roccaraso (6.9km at 6.5%) was the first obstacle of the 225km day, coming at 118.1km into the stage. Then followed two intermediate sprints in quick succession, at Popoli and Bussi sul Tirino at 161.2km and 167.6km respectively

The stage pan out result has pushed Chaves up to second with Dumoulin in third. Froome is no longer in the top 10, nor is Aru.
