Thomas de Ghent (Lotto-Soudal) wins stage 19 in Gijon, Vuelta Espana.
Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) outsprints (Trek-SegaFredo) Jarlinson Pantano and local hero Ivan Garcia Cortina (Bahrain Merida) to win a reduce breakaway stage 19 in Gijón, Vuelta a Espana.
Winner on the Stelvio at the 2012 Giro and Mont Ventoux at last year's Tour, Thomas De Gendt has now claimed stages in all three Grand Tours. "Today was the last chance for the breakaway. Ok, tomorrow maybe, but that’s for the guys under 65 kilos and I’m not in that group so today was the last chance," he says. "We had a fantastic Vuelta with the team, with already three victories and today is the cherry on the top for me.
Chris Froome (Team Sky) keeps red leaders jersey ahead of tomorrow's penultimate stage to Angliru. Nicolas Roche (BMC) attacks Romain Bardet (AG2R) attacks Chris Froome (Team Sky) softly brought the remains of the field home calmly the line.
With just three days remaining and one of those destined to end in a bunch sprint, and another in a battle royale between the climbers and GC contenders, much was on the line as the breakaway formed on stage 19.
