Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) wins stage 10 ITT stage in Montefalco, Italy.

Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) crushes stage 10 individual time trial and takes over race leaders pink jersey in Montefalco, Giro d'Italia.

The Dutch national champion used his huge power to set a time of 50:37 for the 39.8km course, enough to beat Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) by 49 seconds, with Bob Jungels (Quick-Step Floors) third, seven seconds slower.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) fought hard to limit his losses while racing in a pink skinsuit but a lack of natural time trialling ability and strong side and head winds cost him dearly, even blowing him across the road at one point.
Quintana bunny-hopped a kerb in the middle of a sweeping early corner but struggled in the final part of the course as fatigue hit hard. He finished in 53:30, a massive 2:53 behind Dumoulin. Dumoulin was already the virtual pink jersey at the first time check after 9.8km and, after starting the day third overall at 28 seconds, he now leads the Colombian by a significant 2:23.

He can now pace his efforts in the mountains, while Quintana will have to go on the attack and gain an advantage of at least minute before the final 29.3km Monza to Milan time trial.

Quintana also lost a chunk of time to many other overall contenders, especially Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), and was left to think how he can pull back time on Dumoulin while also watching out for attacks from everyone else.
Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) was again consistent and is now third overall at 2:38.
Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) was only 11 seconds faster than Quintana but remains fourth overall, now 2:40 down on Dumoulin.
